Background

Live music in the UK has traditionally been powered by the commercial sector or by post WWII state subsidy invested mainly in classical orchestras.

The commercial sector, generally focussed on replicating past popular success, increasingly avoids taking risks. The subsidised classical sector, generally focussed on replicating existing repertoire, may take what it sees as artistic risk but is generally endlessly tinkering with the classical cannon.

Exciting, different, new projects can happen but they are most usually to be found in the unique infrastructure and economic conditions that exist in London.  The rest of the UK most often misses out on that cultural wealth.

Music Beyond Mainstream (MBM) seeks to make interventions in that traditional way of doing things to ensure exciting and distinctively different music based projects are more equitably distributed around the UK.
